Marco Zaplan Critical minerals, just energy transition, and open data consultant.
Marco Zaplan speaking at an EITI open data event

I am a data ninja working in the public and development sector.

Hi, I'm Marco. I'm an economist, public policy analyst, demographer, and data scientist working in the public and development sector. I work at the intersection of critical minerals, just energy transition, public financial management, and open data. My approach is to always focus on simplicity, systems, and sustainability. I work with governments, multilaterals, and nonprofits to unlock the potential of data in various applications. I help them by analyzing and visualizing data using innovative tools to inform policy reforms, advocacies, and programs.

Work I love doing

Resource governance
Beneficial ownership, contract transparency, systematic disclosure, and revenue transparency. Technical assistance to governments and civil society on extractive industries governance.
Just energy transition
Policy research and analysis on just transition frameworks, critical minerals, and coal transition. Mapping, screening, and assessing national policies across Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
Data and research
Quantitative and qualitative research using R, Python, SPSS, and Stata. Methods include financial modelling, geospatial analysis, survey design, multilevel regression, and mixed methods. Producing dashboards, databooks, and interactive tools that make data accessible.
Policy and advocacy
Writing policy briefers, developing advocacy strategies, facilitating multi-stakeholder consultations, and delivering capacity-building sessions for governments and civil society.
